Episode
Gandalf's Ring of Power
On a bridge under Moria, Gandalf says fourteen words that fans have argued about for seventy years: "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor." Under his glove sits Narya, the Ring of Fire, forged by Celebrimbor in Eregion around 1590 of the Second Age and handed to him by Cirdan the Shipwright at the Grey Havens. He carried it for 2,021 years, and Tolkien names it exactly once in all of The Lord of the Rings. This episode takes the sentence apart. The chain of custody and the contradiction Tolkien never resolved. Cirdan's gift speech, the only description Narya ever gets, which promises nothing but relief from weariness and despair. The Flame Imperishable that Melkor searched the Void for and never found. Arien and the Balrogs, two fates for spirits of the same kind. And the shutting-spell at the Chamber of Mazarbul, less than an hour earlier, that Gandalf lost.
