Gandalf

Gandalf is not merely a wizard but Olorin, a Maia who existed before the world creation. When the Valar needed emissaries to combat Sauron, they chose a radically different strategy from past interventions that had devastated entire continents. The Istari would be forbidden from revealing their power or dominating free will, instead guiding through counsel and persuasion. Olorin, who had learned pity and patience from Nienna in Valinor blessed gardens, confessed he was too weak and feared Sauron. Manwe chose him precisely for this self-awareness. On the Bridge of Khazad-dum, Gandalf finally revealed his true allegiance as a servant of the Secret Fire, battling a fallen Maia for ten days before both fell. Sent back by Eru Iluvatar himself, Gandalf the White returned with greater authority yet unchanged purpose. The god who chose weakness proved that wisdom and mercy accomplish what raw power cannot.
